SIDEWOOD ESTATE WINE

OUR STORY

Sidewood is a privately owned vineyard, nestled in the cool climate region of the Adelaide Hills, the heart of Australian premium wine. Owners and Vignerons Owen and Cassandra Inglis, who have owned the estate since 2004, aim to create stylish, elegant wines with a focus on high quality from estate grown fruit.

WINEMAKING

The Sidewood Winery is a state of the art winery that was the original site of Mayhem and Co. Sidewood Wines are made by internationally acclaimed winemakers Natasha Mooney and Darryl Catlin. LOBETHAL ROAD

Take the road less travelled.

Lobethal Road leads you to handcrafted wines of intense flavour and cool climate character. Located 40 minutes from Adelaide, our vineyard and Cellar Door are nestled at the foot of Mount Torrens in the picturesque Adelaide Hills, South Australia.

Established in 1998 by Dave Neyle and Inga Lidums, the family-owned vineyard produces an award-winning range of white and red wines under the Lobethal Road and premium Bacchant labels.

The five-hectare vineyard, nestled at the foot of Mt Torrens, has north-easterly slopes that nurture low yielding vines. The resulting wine retains elegant cool climate characteristics through minimal intervention in the vineyard and the winery.

We believe our wine is made in the vineyard – what we do there sets the foundation for great wines. We allow the wine to be simply portrayed with minimal intervention in the vineyard and the winery. Our approach to winemaking is to allow the distinctive fruit flavours to express themselves.

Lobethal Road embraces an environmentally sustainable approach to vineyard management and uses solar energy throughout the property.

NEPENTHE

Nepenthe: described by Homer in The Odyssey as an Egyptian herbal drink so powerful that it eases grief and banishes sorrow from the mind.

In 1994, the Tweddell family purchased a premium property in the sub-region of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills. The property was carefully selected and planted to 24 hectares of vines with the intent of producing premium wine. Proven varieties such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted, as well as interesting varieties such as Zinfandel and Pinot Gris. In 1996, Nepenthe ed-james-smallreceived approval to build its winery, only the second in the Adelaide hills at the time (the first being Petaluma in 1978).

In the backdrop of the cool heights of the Adelaide Hills, we started producing some soul reposing potions of our own: uncompromising wines of outstanding quality and internationally recognised distinction. Wines that, strangely enough, have been impressing both critics and consumers with their varietal faithfulness and subtle Adelaide Hills nuances.

From the beginning, our wines have received positive review from the press and numerous medals on the show circuit.
In the first few vintages, Nepenthe wines featured in James Halliday’s Top 100, The UK Times Top 100, The Advertiser Top 100, The International Wine Challenge as well as many other feature media articles.

Due to this demand, in 1997 Nepenthe acquired a property in Charleston within the Adelaide Hills and has planted a further 43 hectares of vineyard. Then in 2002 a 25 hectare vineyard was acquired in Balhannah (where our cellar door is located), and in 2005 Nepenthe acquired its latest vineyard, 38 hectares in Hahndorf, with room for further expansion.

So when you sit back and contemplate an inviting glass of Nepenthe, there is little time for grief and a total absence of sorrow indeed – Enjoy !
