The Zerella Wines story began back in 1926, when life’s daily struggles in Campania, Italy forced two poor families to turn their backs on a native land in search of a better future. Embarking on a quest to follow their dreams, the two families, led by two brave men, migrated to South Australia where they embraced all they knew; a life on the land, a passion for farming, grape growing and winemaking. In doing so they established what was to become a family heritage in the wine industry.
Zerella Vineyards currently owns and operates five vineyards ranging from Sellicks Hill to Kangarilla in the picturesque McLaren Vale region. We have specifically chosen each of these vineyards because we believe at each location, the soil characteristics, the varieties planted and the vineyard’s microclimate combine to naturally produce fruit of the highest quality, which in turn allows us to produce exceptional wines.

3 Dark Horses is the new project for former Coriole winemaker Matt Broomhead. When the opportunity arose in 2009 to make wine from Bruno Romano’s old vineyard in the Seaview subregion of McLaren Vale, Matt teamed up with his father Alan and grandfather Frank and the Three Dark Horses were born.

Today Matt and Alan run this small label with Matt’s 88-year-old grandfather Frank a vintage regular. Their focus is on producing small batch, hand made, and affordable wines of character.

All of the work is done in our small facility 10 minutes north of McLaren Vale. The range consists of a Grenache Rose, a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Touriga Nacional, a single vineyard old vine Grenache and a single vineyard Shiraz.

Battle of Bosworth makes single vineyard, organically grown wines from our family vineyards located in McLaren Vale, South Australia.

Battle of Bosworth was established in 2001 by Joch Bosworth and Louise Hemsley-Smith, and the wines take their name from the original Battle of Bosworth, fought on Bosworth Field, Leicestershire, England in 1485. Our modern day Battle of Bosworth saw the conversion of ‘Edgehill’ vineyard to organic viticulture in 1995 on vineyards established in the early 1970’s by Joch’s parents. All our vines are certified 100% ‘A’ grade organic by Australian Certified Organic.

Battle of Bosworth make wines with flavour, texture, purity and balance, that best express the unique characteristics of their McLaren Vale foothills site.

At Samuel’s Gorge I am looking to collate the tools and experience that I have gathered over the years to craft wines with focus, specialising in three key varietals that I think excel in McLaren Vale; Grenache, Shiraz and Tempranillo.

The barn from which I work was built in 1853 and is positioned on a ridge top that runs east/west on the southern lip of the Oakaparinga River National Park. Dramatic Australian wilderness greets me every morning on the way to the barn.

When you come to Samuel’s Gorge I host tastings in what was historically an olive press house; and I image a blacksmith workshop before that. Visitors are encouraged to take time out and embrace the unique and beautiful surrounds. Our wines like all wine should be part of an occasion, shared with friends amongst engaging conversation and chatter. For those who have a need a to quench their curiosity for wine knowledge I will be not too far away and always enjoy giving further insight into to my life of wine and how things are done at Samuel’s Gorge.
